I used to tell my Primary Four Creative Writing Class students, "Remember, use petite words powerfully!" That's my alliterative play at work.

The point is, I want them to be brave and never feel they do not have the words in them to write an interesting and credible story.

Here, I would like to share one of the Creative Writing pieces I have reviewed for a friend. The purpose is to reinforce the message: when used appropriately, simple words can carry a reasonably good story any day!

This was written by a 9-year-old:

I genuinely like this piece of writing because it is absolutely focused and clearly written. It does not have any dissipated idea or superfluous statement. Focus is the No.1 criteria in any piece of writing, be it narrative, recount or expository.

I highlighted certain portions in yellow because I saw great potential in them. Just tweak them a bit here and there and...VIOLA! The entire piece of writing would be elevated to a whole new level.

The following is my comment, in pink:

So, the revised writing now looks more polished:

So, there you have it. Creative Writing isn't that tough after all. You can draw your inspiration from your daily life. Remember, use petite words powerfully to tell your story!
